Immerwahr obteve seu diploma de bacharel pelo Mount Holyoke College em 1935. Um de seus tutores no Mount Holyoke foi a arqueóloga Caroline Morris Galt. Ela ganhou seu Ph.D. Do Bryn Mawr College, em 1943, com uma dissertação intitulada "O estilo pictórico micênico de pintura de vaso no século XIII a.C."

Ela foi casada com Henry Rudolph Immerwahr de 1944 até sua morte. Ela atuou como membro do corpo docente em clássicos e história da arte na Universidade da Carolina do Norte em Chapel Hill.

Em 2021, a Escola Americana de Estudos Clássicos em Atenas nomeou uma suíte em homenagem a ela e ao marido.
