Vala

História

A Vala foi criada como a Associação Vitoriana para a Automação da Biblioteca em 1978 em resposta ao surgimento de catálogos automatizados de bibliotecas e outras tecnologias que estavam revolucionando a indústria na época. Em 2006, o nome de Vala foi alterado para Vala - Bibliotecas, Tecnologia e Futuro. Isso foi reconhecido de mudanças dramáticas no cenário de informações, que incluem a ascensão de e -books e ejourais, a Web social, computação em nuvem e dispositivos móveis. Nos últimos anos, a Vala assinou o Memorando de Entendimento (MOU) separado entre a Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) e a Associação de Bibliotecas da Nova Zelândia Lianza para promover a cooperação e coordenar melhor as atividades da respectiva organização.

Governança e associação

A VALA é governada por um comitê eleito anualmente dos membros da Vala. A associação está aberta a qualquer pessoa interessada nos objetivos profissionais da organização.

Conferências

A Conferência Bienal da Vala é uma das maiores conferências do seu tipo na região. Começando em 1981, as conferências da Vala forneceram um dos principais pontos de contato para os bibliotecários australianos com seus colegas no exterior.

Desde 2010, as conferências da VALA foram realizadas no Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Center.

Eventos de desenvolvimento profissional

A Vala realiza uma série de eventos de desenvolvimento profissional presencial e on-line ao longo do ano. Os tópicos das reuniões apóiam e promovem uma compreensão da tecnologia nas bibliotecas e no setor de informações mais amplo. Sempre que possível, os podcasts gratuitos dessas reuniões estão disponíveis no site da Vala.

Prêmios

A VALA pretende apoiar ainda mais a pesquisa no setor de ciências da informação da biblioteca através do fornecimento de uma série de prêmios

A Vala concede os seguintes prêmios:

The Robert D. Williamson Award – Awarded biennially to an individual or organisation who, in the opinion of the judging panel, is currently making an outstanding contribution to the development of information technology usage in Australian libraries and is positively and significantly influencing development in information technology usage within libraries.The VALA Award – made biennially, is presented to the Australian library or information centre judged to have made the most innovative use of information technology during the previous two years.The VALA Travel Scholarship – every two years VALA offers up to two Travel Scholarships to enable suitable persons to travel overseas to examine aspects of library automation. Recipients receive up to A$13,000 towards travel, accommodation and living expenses. Successful candidates must complete their study in time to present their findings at the following VALA Biennial Conference.The VALA Student Award - Each year, the VALA Student Award is presented to one student from RMIT University and one from Monash University, in recognition of outstanding achievement in postgraduate library and information management courses.
